LONDON-Class cruiser ordered from HM Dockyard; Portsmouth under the 1925 Estimates and laid down on 23rd February 1926. The ship was launched on 14th September 1927 by the Lady Mayoress of the City of London as the eleventh RN ship with this name, first used in 1636 for a 40 gun ship supplied by the City of London to Charles I. She was completed on 31st January 1929 and in November 1938 was Flagship of the 1st Cruiser Squadron., Mediterranean Fleet. After successful WARSHIP WEEK National Savings campaigns held in the City of London in March 1942 this cruiser was adopted by INVESTMENT TRUSTS in the City of London.
